The Act of Sewing, a virtual book launch with Sonya Philip

Regular price $20.00 Sale

Join us for a virtual evening of fun and discussion with Sonya Philip of 100 Acts of Sewing

When: April 29th 6:30-8:30 MST

We are so excited to help her launch her new book The Act of Sewing: How to Make and Modify Clothes to Wear Every Day into the world! The book is an in depth guide to sewing simple garments so that you can make clothes that you want to wear!

Maybe you learned to sew in school and have a sewing machine, but it hasn’t seen the outside of the closet since your last move. Or maybe you are completely new to the craft, with a lot of enthusiasm, but no idea how to thread a needle. No matter where you’re coming from in terms of experience, this workbook (including patterns for two tops, a skirt, and a pair of pants) will empower you to express your personal style and make clothes that are comfortable and stylish.

In the book, Sonya provides suggestions for mixing the patterns together to create new garment iterations as you gain confidence—structural adjustments such as full bust, no bust, long torso, big, small, etc., as well as a range of possible alterations and embellishments including sleeves, pockets, hems, and more! Going beyond simple pattern instructions, this book will make sewing garments accessible for many different body types with sizes ranging from XS to 5X. The patterns provide a natural jumping off point for modification, allowing readers to design and decide. Mix and match the different elements to build unique combinations!

Sonya Philip is an artist, designer and teacher. Four years ago, Sonya started 100 Acts of Sewing, making dresses while documenting the process. Since then she has made it her mission to convince people to sew their own clothes. When not covered in bits of thread, she can be found knitting another cardigan or baking. Sonya lives in San Francisco with her family.

We have all of Sonya's paper patterns in stock and will have her book available for purchase and stay tuned for related workshops and/or sew alongs!

Cost: $20 for discussion (( book sold separately, you can buy a book at MG starting April 27))

this $20 dollars acts as a future store credit with Maker General...use it how you wish but you could totally use it to buy fabric for the 100 acts of sewing sew along that we will host in May. More info on that coming super soon.
